Finance Fund Lending Supports Remodeling of Former Nelsonville Hospital into Much-Needed Primary and Behavioral Health Facility

On June 22, 2017, Integrated Services for Behavioral Health (ISBH) received a building and 4 acre land donation from OhioHealth to redevelop the former Doctors Hospital of Nelsonville into The Mary Hill Center. The 70,000 sq. ft. building is just north of Nelsonville’s downtown Public Square and was built in 1950 with an addition completed in 1973.

The total development cost of the project was approximately $4 million for the rehabilitation of the building, including a new roof, elevator, HVAC system, and solar panels. Finance Fund provided Integrated Services for Behavioral Health with almost $3.3 million to complete the needed upgrades. ISBH partnered with Hopewell Health Centers on this project.

Integrated Services for Behavioral Health is a nonprofit social services organization which provides southeastern and central Ohio with a comprehensive array of behavioral health and other services. Hopewell Health Centers is an integrated health care organization, serving 12 counties throughout southeastern Ohio, providing comprehensive behavioral, dental and primary health care. There will be additional opportunities for other non-profit entities to reside at the Mary Hill Center to provide additional community and health care services.

“Doctors Hospital closed in the fall of 2016, with the opening of the new OhioHealth Nelsonville Health Center. During that time, Integrated Services proposed a plan to repurpose the facility to provide behavioral health and other critical services to Nelsonville. This was a collaborative effort that took place over the course of several years. We are pleased to bring these much needed services to Athens County.”
– Diana Turoff, President + CEO, Finance Fund

The Mary Hill Center offers a variety of community services including: primary and behavioral healthcare, a new dental clinic, and a substance use detox program. Funding for the dental clinic was provided, in part, from the Osteopathic Heritage Foundations and other local funding entities.

This project created 15 full-time, 10 part-time jobs and 20 full-time construction jobs in a highly distressed area consisting of a 36% poverty rate, 56% median family income and 26% unemployment rate.
